How to go gray in one day

Updated: Oct 14
Is it really possible to cut through years of hair color and go full silver fox in one day? Yes… with an asterisk.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to going gray in one day, and not everyone is a good candidate for this option. It’s all based on factors like your starting point, overall goals, existing silver percentage, health of your hair, budget, etc… but yes, it is possible to achieve silver fox status in one day. I call it: the silver session.
And you’re here to understand how it works. So let’s get into it.
What is a silver session?
A silver session is an all-inclusive, hourly highlighting session custom designed for your going-gray process. Ideally it happens all in one day, but sometimes it has to be broken into multiple sessions.
If you’re done with coloring your hair (or someone you know is) and ready to embrace the glitter, this could be your move—especially if you’re a rip-off-the-bandaid kind of person once you’ve made up your mind about something.
Silver session breakdown
The goal:
Get you as close to your natural gray pattern as possible in one day (sometimes multiple sessions)
The investment:
$125-$150 an hour, generally somewhere between 4-10 hours
The process:
You might have guessed that this varies from person to person, but it always includes meticulous foiling with highlights and lowlights to match your natural gray pattern and break through the line of demarcation from your grown-out color, a K18 repair treatment from start to finish, as many rounds of toner as needed, and a haircut.
The outcome:
Never having to color your roots ever again. Also known as sweet freedom.

Yes, these sessions are expensive and time consuming. It’s a meticulous process to match nature’s silver pattern and it takes time for the bleach to break through that hair color. But the idea is you only do it one time and you’re done forever. For-ev-errr.
Think of how much you’ll save (on money and sanity) when you’re not coloring your roots every 4-6 weeks. This is one of those times where ripping off the bandaid is totally worth it.
What does maintenance look like after a silver session?
I get this question a lot, and it’s a valid one.
More often than not, maintenance looks like a ‘Tone & trim’ service every 10-12 weeks(ish) to maintain the cool tones and keep those ends healthy as your natural silver grows in.
That said, it all depends on your starting point, end goals, budget, and many other factors. That’s why whatever plan we come up with is 100% customized for you.
How do you know if you’re a candidate for going gray in a day?
All silver sessions require an in-person consultation first where we’ll talk through your goals, get a solid understanding of your starting point, do a test strand to see how your hair will hold up to the process, and determine our game plan going forward.
My priority is always to maintain the integrity of your hair, and not everyone’s hair can handle the bleaching required to cut through haircolor enough to get it silver. But, if you don’t qualify, don’t let that discourage you.
Alternate options if you’re not a candidate for a silver session
Not everyone’s hair is in the right place to go gray in one day, but there are still plenty of options for blending and diffusing that color line to make growing out (or beginning to embrace) the glitter a lot easier.
Custom foiling to blend the glitter

Just because we can’t push your hair to silver in a single session doesn’t mean we can’t get it lightened and blend out that line of demarcation for an easier grow-out process. That, coupled with a root shadow, is one of the best ways to blend the glitter without fully covering it.
Root shadow to soften grow-out
A root shadow can also be a standalone process. This is essentially a slightly darker toner at the root for your new growth (coverage wise, think: lip gloss vs. lipstick) to add some depth and warmth to the grays, while maintaining their “natural highlight” effect.
A big chop
Getting rid of as much hair as you’re comfortable with goes a long way toward getting you to your silver goals. This option should definitely not be made impulsively, though. Take some time to think about it. And if you just need to talk it out with a professional, I know one. Heard she’s pretty good. Schedule a free consultation below.
How to book a silver session
Your first step is to schedule a no-pressure, in-person consultation. We’ll talk through all the possibilities, and based on your test strand and ultimate goal, I’ll give you an estimate for the timing and cost of your custom session. From there, all that’s left is to consult our calendars to find a day and time for your service.
If you’re not a candidate for a silver session, we’ll come up with a game plan together and get your next step scheduled.
And, if you’re not sure what you should do (or even if you’re ready to go gray—yet), you can still schedule a consultation just to chat. I’d love to answer all of your questions and give you as much information as possible so you can make an informed, confident decision about where you go next on your hair journey.
Thanks for being here! Love you, bye!
